Many in the early childhood workforce face barriers to becoming lead teachers in the City of Chicago. They struggle to complete the required coursework, pass state tests, and collect video for the licensure exam. A program at the University of Illinois at Chicago is intended to not only help people overcome these obstacles, but equip them with the skills needed to thrive as lead teachers. Tim Curby, Applied Developmental Psychology associate professor, is part of a team of researchers and teacher preparation professionals (PI: Main) who secured five years of funding from the US Department of Education to implement and evaluate this program. Cohorts of teacher residents will participate in four semesters of coaching and professional learning communities with emphases on social–emotional teaching, working with diverse learners, teaching STEM topics, and supporting sustained growth.
